This seminar focuses on the multiple relationships between ‘dance’ and ‘culture’ by exploring examples of various dance practices and movement systems worldwide. The course will provide a closer look at the methodologies for approaching a dance practice in its own terms and beliefs, as well as the bodily aesthetics and musical relationships present in the practice. The seminar will combine conceptual frameworks from dance anthropology, ethnochoreology, and Intangible Cultural Heritage, addressing topics such as power relations and identities. The course will offer lectures, in-person discussions, and some practical sessions on the traditions of bodily techniques as multisensorial phenomena. The overview of dance cultures will encompass several case studies from different countries, and students will be guided to explore a particular dance practice of their choice, which they will develop as a seminar paper for the course.
